HOME MEDICINE CHEST

A New Way of Thinking About First-Aid!
By Dr. Valeria Wyckoff, NMD, RD

When I started on my first homeopathic constitutional,  I felt a little disoriented as I packed up my menthol chapsticks, antibiotic skin lotion and cortisone creams.  What was I going to use instead? I did not want to interfere with my constitutional remedy.
Since then I've discovered a new way of looking at first aid, and have found products that work even better.  My entire family has benefitted from this new knowledge.
I found these products  in local health food stores and at drugstores.  We also mail ordered  from
Homeopathic Educational Service (See Resources on page 3).
Bruises, falls, strains and sprains:  I have been very pleased with Arnica ointment for the many times when someone in the family gets a hard bang.  I could only give them a hug before.  Now, with Arnica we have something that takes away the pain and heals it faster!  Just apply it to where it hurts.  For sprains and strains we do ice and elevate it also.  Do not use Arnica ointment if the skin is broken.
Sunburn , cuts and scrapes:
Use Calendula for skin irritations , cuts and sunburns.   The tincture (diluted 1 dropper full to ¼ cup water) is excellent for rapid healing of cuts and sunburns.  It can be sprayed or gently dabbed on.  If I think the cut could become infected I will add Hypericum tincture (1 dropper full) to the water also.  Calendula ointment on chapped lips works great with just one or two applications.
Infected cuts, Smashed fingers or toes:  Hypericum tincture
works great on those cuts you ignored and they've become a little red.  Just dilute the Hypericum in water and soak or swab the cut.  Do this a couple of times a day if you need to.  Hypericum applied to nerve pain types of injuries, like on fingers or toes, works great to relieve the pain.
Yeast infections:
Create a douche by brewing two cups of chamomile tea and cooling it to room temperature.  Add  forty drops of Calendula tincture.  Eases the discomfort immediately.  Douche for three days and then wait for three days.  Finally, douche daily for seven days.
Eye wash:
Boil one cup of water and add twenty drops each of Hypericum tincture and Calendula tincture. Pour over a cotton ball and wipe from nose out to the corner over lightly closed eyes.  Keep the mixture covered between uses.  Works great--clearing and soothing immediately!
General sense of coming down with something:  When we feel run down, like a cold or flu could be on the way, we take Echinacea tincture.  Put twenty drops in a glass of water or juice.  Take it three times a day for a couple of days.  It was very popular in the days before antibiotics were discovered, and is now experiencing a resurgence.  It is a boost for your immune system.  I usually add a dose of Vitamin C  when I take the Echinacea for additional support.
I came across the box of old medicines a couple of months ago and realized we didn't need them any more. We have been much healthier with our new way of thinking!

Vital Force

Homeopathy is a vitalistic medicine system (Chinese medicine is another major one).  They both acknowledge the vital force (chi or prana).  This is the intangible intelligence that comes with life.  The vital force represents some form of energy.  Every life function depends on this energy.  Because we cannot perceive energy with the naked eye (nor measure this energy with current science), we find it difficult to comprehend, yet we know when it is there and when it isn't.  It is the difference between something that is alive and that which is dead.
When the vital force becomes disturbed the result is symptoms--emotional, physical and mental.  A homeopathic medicine that matches these symptoms works as a catalyst, bringing the vital force back to health and helping the body to heal itself.

Over 170 Years of Homeopathy in the United States

  • The first American Homeopaths began practicising in the mid-1820's.
  • The American Institute of Homeopathy was founded in 1844, three years before the American Medical Association.
  • Homeopathic remedies were recognized in 1938 by the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, and are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.  The FDA's Compliance Policy Guide of 1988, controls how they are marketed.
